Softball sweeps Falcons
April 27, 2003
NIU coach Donna Martin said she would like to win two of three games against Bowling Green this weekend. Her team came up with that and more.
The Huskies (21-18, 11-6 MAC) swept the Falcons at Mary Bell Field in a doubleheader on Saturday and a shutout on Sunday.
“I am absolutely ecstatic with the sweep,” Martin said. “You need to win games like this deep in the season.”
The doubleheader was a classic tale of Jekyll and Hyde.
In the first game, the Huskies and Falcons (21-23-1, 12-9 MAC) went nine innings without scoring any runs.
In the ninth inning, NIU’s Paige Granath allowed two runners to reach base with only one out. Martin then turned to senior Amy Krahula, who retired the next two batters, to get out of the inning.
“I just went out there and believed in myself and my teammates,” Krahula said. “There was a lot of pressure, but I have a lot of confidence in the people behind me.”
With one out in the 10th, Amy Ligmanowski hit a slow roller to the first baseman and Kelly Drozd scored the winning run on a hook slide avoiding the tag by the catcher to win 1-0.
The second game NIU scored 13 runs on 12 hits in five innings as it won 13-2.
The game was finished by the fifth inning due to slaughter rule, when one opponent is leading by eight or more after five innings.
Del Toro again came up with a big hit as she hammered a two-run home run over the right-center field fence. Drozd finished with two hits and a team-high three RBIs, which incidently was more runs than the Falcons scored in all three games combined.
On Sunday, Bowling Green was shut out for the second time in three games as the Huskies won 2-0. Paige Shemoski was responsible for both of the Huskies runs in the win.
“[The seniors] came up big all weekend and that is exactly what you want from your senior leadership,” Martin said.
