‘No longer enrolled’
March 4, 2003
Mount Carmel’s star running back Greg Owens, the highly touted athlete who signed a national letter of intent to play at NIU, no longer is enrolled at the South Side Catholic school.
Two sources close to the situation who spoke on anonymity said Owens was expelled from the school for stealing from a school locker room.
The Rev. Carl Markelz, principal of Mount Carmel, confirmed Owens’ departure in a statement to the Chicago Tribune where he said the senior is “no longer enrolled at Mount Carmel.”
Markelz would not comment on any disciplinary issue.
With only a few months left until Owens was scheduled to graduate, the issue has a definite effect on his future as a Huskie.
According to NIU assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Sabock, a student-athlete will be entitled to a scholarship as long as the athlete graduates, meets NCAA eligibility requirements and is accepted by the university.
“When you graduate, you have to meet NCAA requirements,” Sabock said. “Anyone who doesn’t qualify has to sit out a year or go to a junior college and get an associate’s degree.”
Owens, a second team All-State running back, rushed for 1,720 yards and 17 touchdowns last fall in leading the Caravan to their 10th state championship.
