SA executive elections today

By Nick Swedberg

Today and Wednesday are Student Association executive candidate elections, marking the culmination of a month-long campaign by candidates.

“This has been one of the cleanest elections in past history,” said Rick Clark, director of University Programming and Activities.

And SA members agree.

“All the candidates have been extremely cooperative,” said Andrew Nelms, SA elections commissioner.

Nelms said the candidates have been checking with him before doing their campaigning.

“Having an election is not a cheap cost for the students,” Clark said. “This is not the time to be a comedian.”

Clark warned if students write names like “Mickey Mouse” on the ballots, they will be thrown out. Only people who had gone to one of the candidate’s meetings earlier this semester are eligible for the ballot.

To help remain objective, the SA Board of Elections enlisted help from the county.

“We always get election judges through the county clerk,” Nelms said. Nelms said in the past they would have students run the polls, but that created problems.

Ballots will be stored in the Student Legal Assistance Office between today and Wednesday.

Should enough ballots be thrown out, resulting in a margin of error greater than 5 percent, the election will be thrown out and rerun at a later date.

Candidates need half of the votes plus one to win. Otherwise, Clark said, a runoff is conducted on April 2 and will last one day.

Positions up for filling this semester are president, vice president, treasurer and student trustee.
