Gymnastics host rival Illinois schools

The NIU women’s gymnastics team will be looking for state supremacy at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center when it hosts the State of Illinois Championships.

The Huskies (8-10, 3-3 MAC), who are just two spots out for qualifying for the NCAA South Regionals with a 193.7 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), will look to seek revenge against both UIC and the University of Illinois for losses suffered earlier in the year.

“We’re ready for this meet,” senior Anna Gardina said. “The UIC and U of I meets were our two worst meets of the year, and we can only go up from there. We just have to go out and compete like we know we can.”

NIU also will be taking on an Illinois State team that is coming off its highest score of the season.

The Huskies are riding high on momentum after beating Western Michigan 194.050 to 193.350 for their first MAC road win in five years on Sunday. The 194.050 provided NIU with a road score to boost its RQS.

With a 38.925 all-around score, sophomore Kristina Campos continued to be in good shape to advance to Regionals. Campos is ranked second as an all-around performer in the region.

“We probably have the strongest region in the country with Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arizona,” coach Mark Sontag said. “Anybody that gets there has had just an awesome season.”

The only concern for NIU is Gardina who is nursing lingering foot and leg injuries. Normally an all-around performer, Gardina will not participate on the beam this weekend.

Finishing second in this meet last year, Sontag is feeling more confident this time around.

“This team has done a great job all year, and I feel we have the ability to knock off any team we walk into the gym with,” Sontag said.
