Get your career off the ground

If you’re deluded enough to think you can be just like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, the Midwest Flight Academy has a couple classes for you.
Starting Saturday, Senior Instructor Magnus Myklatun will offer two classes in flight instruction at NIU.
“The goal is to provide high quality flight instruction at a reasonable price,” Myklatun said.
Private Pilot Ground School is a class designed to prepare someone for the Private Pilot written and oral exams, Myklatun said.
“The goal is to prepare a student for the pilot license exam,” Myklatun said. Classes last for six weeks and are every Saturday.
The second class, Instrument Pilot Ground School, helps prepare students for the Instrument Pilot written and oral exams. The Instruments license course is geared more for those who already have their pilot’s license, Myklatun said.
“It gives you more of a leniency,” Myklatun said.
Myklatun said the Instruments license allows a pilot to fly in bad weather.
“We offer courses on a continuous basis,” Myklatun said. He added that they will be offering a course in preparing for the commercial pilot’s license soon but did not know exactly when.
The courses are sponsored by the Holmes Student Center, Myklatun said.
“We’re trying to work up a close relationship with NIU,” he said.
Norm Jenkins, assistant director of the Holmes Student Senter, said Myklatun approached them about hosting classes six weeks ago. Four people have signed up for the class so far.
“One of the things that we have required of Magnus is to provide a roster,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins said they had a background check done by FBI agents in Chicago who verified the legitimacy of the flight academy.
“They have no reason to believe their’s is not a legitimate operation,” Jenkins said.
Myklatun said typical prices for classes similar to these range from $400 to a couple thousand dollars.
“We thought it would be nice to offer a cheaper way but still maintain high quality,” Myklatun said.
Anyone interested can sign up for classes as late as Friday or Saturday morning.
