Moving to Greek Row
February 7, 2003
Are too many fraternities hogging Greek Row?
Not if the ladies of Sigma Lambda Sigma have anything to say about it.
This year, Sigma Lambda Sigma, NIU’s service sorority, will acquire its first house on campus by moving into the old Delta Chi house at 908 Greenbrier Road.
The Delta Chi fraternity moved into the former Delta Upsilon house, 1114 Blackhawk Road., earlier in the semester.
After the D-Chi’s moved, an investor contacted Sigma Lambda Sigma, which gave the sorority a chance to have its own house, said Lindsey Ridenour, vice president of Sigma Lambda Sigma.
Sigma Lambda Sigma always has maintained an active role at NIU through its well-known philanthropy commitments, but it never has had an actual house before.
“We’re very excited about it,” Ridenour said. “We always felt like we missed out on a lot of Greek things before.”
Nearby houses include the Pi Kappa Alpha house and Tau Kappa Epsilon. The ladies anticipate a warm welcome from their neighboring Greeks.
“We get along with both houses really well,” Ridenour said.
Eve Lechowicz agreed.
“We’re really excited. Hopefully they’ll like having a sorority between them,” said Lechowicz, scholarship chair of Sigma Lambda Sigma.
The ladies also said the move will help with all aspects of life for the sorority.
“Having a house will give us a landmark to associate our name with,” Lechowicz said. “It will add some new life to that side of Greenbrier.”
The girls are in the process of making renovations to the old D-Chi house.
“Things weren’t really to our liking, so we’re just re-doing everything to make it more of a sorority house,” Ridenour said.
The sorority projects that renovations should be completed by this summer and expects occupation by August.
