Open Barn

By Andrew Smith

The building that once housed Fat Boy’s finally reopens its doors next week.

The Barn, a new restaurant/bar that moved into the building located at 1215 Blackhawk Road, will open for business Monday.

It will provide a new atmosphere to DeKalb’s nightlife north of campus since it is located across from the Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Sigma Sigma houses.

Alissa Land, a Tri Sig member and junior fashion merchandising major, said The Barn’s location is key.

“I’m kind of excited about it,” Land Said. “It’s convenient and a good thing. There are less people driving for the Greek Row community.”

-Paige Mackey, Alpha Delta Pi philanthropy chair and junior marketing major, agreed.

“It’s good because it will be easier to get to,” Mackey said. “It’s a good thing that we have something else coming in.”

The building has been under renovation, and as many renovation projects tend to do, it took The Barn a little longer to be completed than planned.

“There’s no problem, we just wanted to make sure everything was right,” The Barn owner Chris Gochis said. “There was a lot more stuff to do than was originally expected.”

After renovations, the total area of the upstairs and downstairs is about 12,000 square feet. To the right of the entrance lies the restaurant and to the left lies the bar.

The Barn will have three dart boards, two pool tables and two Golden Tee video games.

In edition to the games, The Barn will introduce new drinks to the DeKalb area. Barnbowls, Fizztinis – The Barn’s signature drink – and 12 different Yard Teas.

Yard Teas are “12 different types of Long Islands except they’re called Yard Teas,” Gochis said – the difference being they are “served in a glass a yard long.” The Barn will have specials on all new drinks opening day.

Aside from the new drinks, The Barn also will provide a new menu to DeKalb.

“Food is what we really emphasize on,” Gochis said. The restaurant will be open 24 hours, with a full menu with everything from pizza to lasagna.

The Barn also will host banquets or small parties.

“We have banquet facilities for anything from local business meetings to weddings,” Gochis said.
