‘We want fun,’ and we got it

A crowd of more than 1,000 people set out to party hard with Infrared, The Lawrence Arms and Andrew WK on Friday night.

It was the largest CAB concert in about 10 years, said John Ugolini, head of the CAB concerts committee.

Nu-metalers Infrared took the stage about 7 p.m., playing a brief, unwelcomed set.

Each Infrared song was greeted with a chorus of “boos” from a crowd consisting of mainly punk rockers and hardcore kids.

Chicago punk trio The Lawrence Arms received a more favorable response, musically conflicting less with the enthusiastic crowd.

The crowd’s energy was like a cannon, with a 1,000-plus person army screaming “party hard.” One inviting poster read, “party hard with us, we are buying tonight.”

The anticipation for Andrew WK was at a boil; even the pre-concert sound check stirred moshing in the ranks of the Duke Ellington Ballroom.

After a long intermission, Andrew WK opened with “It’s Time To Party.” The crowd exploded, and several mosh pits opened on the dance floor.

One mosh pit, endorsed by Andrew WK, exceeded a 30-foot radius, which tested the patience of some security officials.

Security was a common complaint throughout the night, with some fans being tackled or removed during the show.

“I’m not a fan of stopping people trying to dance,” said sophomore anthropology major Brian Gain.

Andrew WK encouraged audience interaction throughout the night. At one point, Andrew WK invited an audience member onstage to play guitar during “We Want Fun.”

Before his encore, Andrew WK performed “Party Hard,” the hit many fans waited to hear the entire night, and then some.

“I’ve been awake for 62 hours, but I’m going to rock it hard with Andrew WK,” said junior art major Lauren Ellis.

In a post-performance moment that was truly rock ’n’ roll, Andrew WK shocked the audience by stage diving right into them.

Andrew’s performance was well-received, and a party was had by many.

“I was really surprised to see so many people as excited as I was,” said Andrew during an autograph signing session that lasted more than three hours.
