SA hosts debt workshop

In order to avoid possible debt, Student Association-recognized campus organizations met Wednesday to review their budget. SA Treasurer Shaun Crisler hosted a workshop for representatives from a number of student organizations.

“Basically, this is the first set of meetings I started to make sure organizations don’t go into debt,” Crisler said. “My goal for the year is to protect student fees.”

Susan Martinez from NIU accounts receivable informed the student organizations the reason why they need to set up an account.

The reason is because if organizations use NIU resources, those departments need an account to bill, Martinez said. Also, Martinez said when organizations change officers, they need to update their accounts.

“We have developed a hot list that we distribute throughout campus,” Martinez said.

The hot list is a list of organizations that fail to pay their accounts receivable bill.

“If your organization is on the hot list, you won’t be able to do anything,” Martinez said. “Not only is it embarrassing, it’s hard to get off.”

Martinez recommended the organizations check their balance before they leave for the summer.

“If you got to do anything on campus that isn’t SA funded … you should be putting it on your accounts receivable,” said Rick Clark, director of University Programming and Activities. “We get a copy of the hot list every time they update it.”

Clark told the organizations that if they wanted to hold fundraisers, they have to run them themselves and not get others to do it for them. He also warned them that if they do not fill out change of officer forms when they change officers, it could result in suspension.

“It takes all of two seconds,” said Crisler about the forms.

Crisler also warned the organization about filling out expenditure forms about signage for events.

“If the event is SA funded, be sure to put it on the sign,” Crisler said.
