So much to do, no time
February 26, 2003
Finding enough time to handle school, a job, friends and family can be troublesome for an average college student, but help is out there.
Sylvia Fuentes, director of the University Resources for Latinos, said students have a hard time with the various activities they have to deal with each day.
“We are finding that students are so busy with doing whatever they are doing that they don’t have time to fit in school,” she said.
To attempt to teach students proper time management, URL and the Counseling and Student Development Center are sponsoring a free session titled “24/7 101: Time Management for Those of Us Who Don’t have Enough (Time).”
“[The purpose is to] offer some suggestions on time management and what that means,” Fuentes said.
She said that they hope to provide students with some kind of guide to fit in school, social life, friends and family.
“I am hoping that it will give them some kind of vision to get out of the tunnel,” she said. “I am hoping that they will be able to walk away and be able to prioritize.”
Fuentes added that sometimes it’s acceptable to say no to doing things because we don’t have time to do everything.
“The goal is to help them emotionally, physically and academically,” she said.
The session will take place at 7 p.m. today at the Latino Center, 515 Garden Road. Refreshments will follow the event.
Brian Pillsbury, coordinator of career services at the SCDC, said he hopes to find out what the students’ needs are.
“My main goal for the program is to basically get a sense from the student as to where they are at, as far as time management, and then to have some interactive exercises about more efficient time management,” he said. “For students in general, it can be a problem. It’s a common source of stress, that I don’t have enough time to do this or that.”
Renae Chung, a doctoral intern at the SCDC, also will speak at the event.
