Road Trip
February 13, 2003
Troubled Hubble has come a long way from working in a movie theater.
This Sunday, Troubled Hubble will perform the fourth of 34 tour dates, at Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m.
-This Sunday’s 18-and-over show also will feature Bicycle Day, Murder By Death and Ten Grand.
The band will travel in a van packed with instruments, sandwiches, sleeping bags and, above all, a Playstation 2.
Band members Andrew Lanthrum (a former NIU student), Nate Lanthrum, Josh Miller and Chris Otepka built a padded entertainment center (loaded with a television and Playstation 2) into their van.
On the road, one band member will drive, another will be the navigator, while the other two will be in the backseat busting flips playing “Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4.”
While many amateur bands might struggle with the stress of touring, Troubled Hubble seems to be at home with it.
“You really get tight on the road,” Miller said.
This upcoming tour will mark the first national tour for Troubled Hubble, whose song “You Stay Here, I’ll Go Get Help” helped “Penturbia” make The Onion’s “Best Albums of 2002” list.
Troubled Hubble has a very different sound. Otepka describes Troubled Hubble – which before has featured a dancing line – as “smiley, dancey, indie-rock.”
The highlight of Troubled Hubble’s tour, which ends a week short of Easter, will be the South by Southwest bill. This show is known to many as the largest collection of indie-rock bands in the United States. Pretty good for a band that started three years ago.
Since its roots as a high school garage band, Troubled Hubble has released three full-length albums. It is scheduled to release an EP later this year.
The members of Troubled Hubble have been best friends since childhood. Two of the band members (Andrew and Nate Lanthrum) are brothers.
At one point, three of the four band members worked together in a movie theater, the other worked at a Subway.
Tickets for the show can be purchased at Otto’s the day of the show, www.tickets.com or at Record Revolution, 817 W. Lincoln Highway.Troubled Hubble will play with Bicycle Day, Murder By Death and Ten Grand on Sunday at Otto’s.
