Don’t let anger take over
February 10, 2003
Judy Skorek and Nancy Apperson will co-present “When Anger Hijacks Your Emotions” Tuesday.
The presentation is co-sponsored by the Employee Wellness and Assistance Program and University Resources for Women. It is part of a series of speeches under the Wellness Brown Bag Program.
“When Anger Hijacks Your Emotions” will focus on how to identify signs of anger and how to deal with anger effectively.
Apperson devised the topic of Tuesday’s speech and found its title in “Emotional Resilience,” a book by David Viscott.
“The basic strategies are to examine the reasoning behind what triggers our anger, and to think about ways to perhaps add humor to the situation and diffuse tension through relaxing, breathing differently or going for a walk,” Apperson, who is coordinator of EWAP, said.
Anger can color our entire outlook more than any other emotion can, she added.
EWAP resides under the umbrella of Human Resources, but it keeps separate offices to maintain the confidentiality of its clients.
The Wellness Brown Bag lectures attract audiences as small as three or as large as 50, depending on the topics and the speakers, Apperson said.
“To be honest, we get the most students when a class requires them to attend,” Apperson said.
After the presentation there should be time for discussion.
“That’s really the critical part of the program. People get involved and aren’t just lectured at, “Skorek, assistant director of URW, said.
