Faculty Senate may censure offices
February 6, 2003
The Faculty Senate met Wednesday to discuss various faculty and student policy issues, and most importantly to debate the enactment of an office privacy policy.
Mark Cordes, faculty rights and responsibilities chair, presented a new policy citing various necessary items, such as the display of potentially offensive personal decor.
The policy stated that faculty and staff members are responsible for identifying any sensitive or confidential material, university or personal, and dealing with it appropriately.
Unauthorized material found in view during access to an individualís office will be reported to the proper authorities, the policy states.
General concerns for the policy also were addressed to ensure the maintenance of offices and university spaces upholding common sense, decency and civility.

The policy stated that except for routine cleaning and other limited access, faculty will be given ample notification of any inspections to their assigned office space. In addition, faculty or staff will be allowed to be present during inspections.
One of the issues of importance involved the appropriateness of personal items in the office.
The questionable offensiveness of other items in the office area, such as exacto knives, also were discussed.
The Faculty Senate also is thinking of printing a university policy handbook and putting it online, said Sue Willis, president of the Faculty Senate.
