Wrestling tops Eastern and Southern
February 10, 2003
It just was not a good weekend to be a Panther.
The NIU (12-6, 2-1 MAC) wrestling squad beat up on Eastern Illinois on Friday night at Victor E. Court with a final of 42-3, and then later mauled Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Sunday with a final of 49-3.
Helping the Huskies to a win over the EIU Panthers was Marlon Felton, a 125-pounder, as he had a pin over Dexter Wright in the first period. It was the only pin of the day.
The Huskies’ Josh Wooton, the 19th-ranked 141-pounder, had a technical fall, a win over 15 points, against Mike Stanley with a final tally of 20-4.
NIU’s Scott Owen, the third-ranked 157-pounder, had a 28-12 technical fall over Andy Coyle.
“I think that the 28 points I had tonight were the most I ever had,” Owen said. “I know I had scored 25 and 26 before, but this is the highest.”
After the Huskies’ win over EIU, it was on the road down to Edwardsville.
Pacing NIU was eighth-ranked 184-pound Ben Heizer, heavyweight Zac Jensen and Charles Jasinski, who all had pins. Jasinski filled in for Owen in the 157-pound class.
Wooton also had another technical fall, this time with a final of 20-2 over Alec Lininger.
Oliver Vazquez, J.D. Oliva, Sam Hiatt, Felton and Heizer all went 2-0 over the two meets.
“It was a pretty good weekend for us,” Grant said. “We’ve wrestled a ranked opponent almost every week, it’s been a pretty tough schedule. You have to throw in a meet like this every now and then. It was nice not having to worry about winning by a point. It was a good confidence booster and now we have to get ready to wrestle [No. 9] Missouri.”
