February 11, 2003
Quick action by DeKalb police officers led to the capture of three alleged purse snatchers.
Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department praised the work of his officers after their widely broadcasted car description led to arrests Sunday in Rochelle, after a robbery occurred at a local restaurant.
The first robbery took place Friday evening, when a purse was stolen from under a table at Yen Ching, 810 W. Lincoln Highway. The alleged thief fled the restaurant, leaving the scene in a getaway car. Witnesses were able to give the police a description of the vehicle.
On Sunday afternoon at Baker’s Square, 131 N. Annie Glidden Road, two purses were grabbed in a similar fashion. One victim quickly canceled her credit cards. The trail of purchases made with that card allowed the police to alert the included areas, leading to the discovery of the alleged criminals.
Paris Baker, 22, of Stockton was arrested and charged with three counts of theft and unlawful use of credit cards. He was arrested with two alleged accomplices, Anthony Eubanks, 42, and Jessica Hernandez-Fabery, 28, both of Chicago. Eubanks was arrested on one count of theft, and Hernandez-Fabery was charged with unlawful use of a credit card. She also was arrested on an outstanding warrant for retail theft.
Kayes said that after the first purse was stolen, the suspects used the credit card to purchase a gift card from a local store and then returned it to redeem the gift card for cash. In the second theft, the credit card was used at a gas station and a grocery store, where the suspects were apprehended.
Police officers in Rochelle took the three into custody and returned them to DeKalb for processing. They are being held in DeKalb County Jail pending their court dates today.
