Police: Be aware of scam
February 24, 2003
Area residents are being asked to be aware of a possible scam the DeKalb Police Department is investigating.
According to a press release from the department, three incidents have occurred in the northeast part of town, and the targets mainly have been the elderly. The scam involves three to four subjects, who may be driving a black or dark blue SUV.
In the course of the scam, one or two male suspects approach the residence, attempting to gain entrance into the house. According to the police, their story is that they are in the home improvement business and want to do repair work for the residents. While one suspect distracts the victims, the other suspect steals from the home. With these suspects inside distracting the occupants, the remaining two suspects stay outside to be lookouts or to try to gain access to detached garages.
The police department urges area citizens to not allow any unknown subjects into their home and to be suspicious of people wandering neighborhoods offering to do home improvements. Storing valuables in a safe place outside the home is also recommended.
Please call the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400 if you witness any of the described suspicious activity.
