NIU ready for Hawkeye Open

After breaking records in last week’s Iowa Hawkeye Open, the NIU track and field team hopes to run with its momentum and continue their success this weekend.

The Huskies will travel to Eastern Illinois at 9 a.m. on Saturday along with Western Illinois and Bradley for the quadrangular.

As the season continues, the Huskies are trying to emphasize their team motto of “one team, one goal”.

“Our goal is to try and build off each meet,” coach Shantel Twiggs said. “Although we’re not going up against MAC opponents this weekend, we have to know that they are there and so, as they make the turn going into the last four weeks of the season we need to make that same turn.”

With 14 freshmen, the Huskies are adjusting to collegiate athletics.

“We just go out and do what we have to do,” freshman Erica Meyer said. “We all feel as if we’re going to be something special as we get older and more successful.”

By running 10.00.89 in the 3,000 meter run last meet, junior Alicja Czajka proved the Huskies can compete. Czajka’s time puts her second in the MAC in that event.

“The interesting thing about our program is that although we’re only in our third season, the Iowa meet gave you a strong indication of the program we have,” Twiggs said. “We have major individuals who make major contributions but overall we have a more balanced program.”
