‘Janet’

By Kim Krichbaum

Janet Jackson is an icon.

Janet represented everything that a woman could ever want to be: talented and sexy. In May 1993, she released the self-titled album “Janet.” This is her fifth album released since the beginning of her career and is very different than what her fans are used to. The album is filled with all types of music in which Janet does a brilliant job.

The album begins with a slow interlude, then kicks into the song “That’s The Way Love Goes.” This is the first of many awesome singles from the album. The song fills your mind with sexual innuendos and lots of erotic imagery, which seems to be the idea on the whole album. This song earned Janet a Grammy at the 1994 awards for Best R&B Song.

“If” is the standout song on the album because it hits so hard. Janet manages to still be sexy but adds a flavor of attitude and grit. Janet shows that she can be naughty, and that was a side not yet seen by fans. There is a great dance break in the middle of the song that’s really funky and reminiscent of Janet hits like “Black Cat.”

Janet eventually slows it down on the album with mellow songs such as “Again” and “Where Are You Now.” “Again” is a gorgeous and emotionally charged song in which Janet relives her feelings on lost love and what could have been.

To wrap up the album, Janet ends with the sexually driven ballad “Any Time, Any Place.” This is an extremely sexy song about passion and sexual abandonment. Janet’s lyrics paint an erotic image of sex and passion that are felt by all listening to the song.

“Janet” as a whole is a brilliant album; every song is worth a listen. The only problem with the album is the number of interludes, but those can be skipped easily. Because there is so much material on this album, everyone can find something to like.

No matter what kind of mood you are in, “Janet” will find a way to soothe you.
