Putting up its best score of the season wasn’t enough for the NIU gymnastics team, which was forced to settle for fourth place at the Ball State Cardinal Classic on Friday.

For the second consecutive meet, the Huskies (4-6) were in prime position to upset their competitors, but could not get it done on the uneven bars. They mustered just a 47.300 mark to finish with a score of 192.300.

Central Michigan came away as the winner, posting 193.200. Ball State followed them with a 192.975 and Southeast Missouri State University just nipped the Huskies with a score of 192.425.

While NIU put up its highest point total of the year, the finish put a damper on a weekend full of highlights.

The Huskies put up a 48.950 on the floor exercise portion, registering the fifth highest floor score in school history and the highest event score of the night.

Senior Anna Gardina led the way as she posted a 9.875 on the floor to finish second. Freshman Ashlee Williams continued to be impressive as she scored a 9.825 good for third place.

On the vault, senior Kristie Woodin put up a solid score of 9.775, just .025 behind the first place winner to capture second place.

Sophomore Kristina Campos finished third in the all-around with a mark of 38.825, just .200 behind all-around winner Ashley Godwin of SEMO.

Campos worked her way to third place with a 9.850 on the floor exercise. She also put 9.775 on the balance beam and led the Huskie effort on the bars with a 9.675.
