Car hits two students; driver not at fault

wo NIU students were hit by a car at a crosswalk between Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue Tuesday night.

Leslie Paul, 24, of Grayslake, was driving southbound in the center lane of Annie Glidden Road when she hit two pedestrians, Christopher Brown, 20, and Tricia Eby, 19. They were walking westbound toward the residence halls.

Brown and Eby were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital and were released.

Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department said the pedestrians were at fault because they did not use the walk light buttons.

No tickets were issued to the driver.

Lt. Matthew Kiederlen of University Police said the intersection at Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue always has been a problem area.

“We used to put officers there a lot last semester,” Kiederlen said. “It’s a problem we need to address.”

He also said that great strides were made, but the police have to continue to re-examine that intersection.

One of the problems Kiederlen mentioned was that the left turn signal is short to begin with, so cars sometimes continue to block that intersection, and pedestrians continue to walk, even when the green light passes.

“We know that impatient drivers and rude pedestrians can add up to bad accidents,” Kiederlen said.
