There’s a new bar coming to town

If you have lived in the DeKalb area for any length of time, you know there are barns everywhere. But one opening soon will serve food and drinks.

The Barn, 1215 Blackhawk Road, will occupy the former home of Fat Boys Sports Bar and Grill.

“The Barn is just a place to hang out,” manager Chris Gochis said.

Gochis expects the bar will be open the week after winter break begins.

The first Barn bar originally opened in Kenosha, Wis. The Barn will feature a bar and a restaurant.

“The restaurant is going to stay open 24 hours a day,” Gochis said.

Jorge Reyes, a junior hospitality management major, said he thought DeKalb did not need another bar. Sylvia Lawrence, a junior double major in psychology and English, agreed with Reyes.

“For people who want to go, there are enough bars,” Lawrence said.

Gochis said The Barn has a different environment than other bars.

“The Barn has it’s own flavor,” Gochis said. He said the slogan will be “Anything Goes.”

Sophomore biology major Jessica Smith said The Barn sounded similar to a bar she worked at in Wheaton.

“You can eat and drink at the same time,” Smith said.

Gochis was unwilling to release information on specials.

“Our specials are going to be competitive,” he said.

According to liquor license laws in Illinois, there are limits on the price per ounce of alcohol, Gochis said. He said they offer penny pitcher deals at the Kenosha bar, which are not allowed in Illinois.

The Barn also will feature large banquet rooms available for parties, Gochis said.
