Snow blamed for crashes

By Nick Swedberg

With the first big snowfall of the year comes the inevitable motor vehicle accidents, and this year is no exception.

Five accidents were reported Monday, four of which were related directly to the weather.

Sgt. Jim McDougall of the DeKalb Police Department said this is a typical number for the first big snowfall of the year.

Statements from the police accident reports include “[she] lost control of her vehicle on the snowy roadway” and “[he] slid on the slippery road,” which described the conditions motorists faced.

There are a number of safety tips motorists can follow that make for safer driving. McDougall advised motorists to allow more room to slow down and avoid sliding.

Also, allow more room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.

Black ice – ice that appears black on the road and is difficult to see – is another concern motorists should take into account. Avoid slamming on the brakes if at all possible.

McDougall also said that if you have anti-lock brakes, do not pump the brakes. Apply the brakes steadily and slowly.
