Council to vote on raising taxes

By Libby John

Tax raises could be something DeKalb citizens soon will have to deal with.

The DeKalb City Council will decide on a possible tax increase at its Monday meeting.

The increase could cost as much as $35 to $40 more, on average, for an owner of a $150,000 home, said administrative services director Linda Wiggins.

The increase would pay for items such as pensions for police and firefighters, a Taylor Municipal Airport levy and debt service.

Alternatives could be used, such as using general fund reserves, which Wiggins does not recommend.

Another option could be to have less employee personal, vacation and sick days, Wiggins said.

There also will be an ordinance heard to bring back restricted parking on Garden Road.

The ordinance states there will be no parking between 2 and 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

City council members have spoken with residents of that area, as well as students, and will bring their input to the meeting, City Manager Jim Connors said.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at City Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St.
