SA and DeKalb to work together

By Matthew Taillon

The Student Association and City of DeKalb soon will be working together to resolve issues around NIU and the city.

City Manager Jim Connors contacted SA president Kevin Miller on the need for the two organization to set up meetings.

The first meeting is set for Nov. 8 at the city manager’s office. A time has not yet been decided.

“We need to set up a line of communication between the SA and the city staff,” Connors said. “We have to get some issues dealt with.”

Connors decided to contact the SA after the city of Normal, home of Illinois State University, set up regular meetings with ISU’s Student Association.

“My staff thought it would be a good idea to follow Normal’s example and meet with the SA to sort out any concerns and questions,” Connors said.

DeKalb already meets with other city and school groups.

“We even meet with the Greek organizations,” Connors said.

The SA is glad the city is willing to get together and discuss things.

“So much of what both sides do deals with student issues,” Miller said.

Some issues that will be discussed are the Greek Row task force and the Barsema shuttle bus.

“We need to work together and resolve these issues before they become so big that no one can solve them easily anymore,” Miller said.

One issue that some students would like to see worked out is parking at NIU.

“I’d like to see the SA and DeKalb work out the parking problems,” said John Cho, a freshman undeclared business major. “Then my friend wouldn’t have to park at the Convocation Center.”
