Recount comes back identical

Republican Eric Johnson officially won a seat in District 6 of the DeKalb County Board after a vote recount Wednesday morning.

The request came after Democrat Mario Kemp lost the Nov. 5 election by only nine votes to Johnson, who also is the Student Association’s director of governmental affairs.

District 6 represents most of the city’s west side, including Stevenson and Grant towers.

Kemp said he requested the recount because he wanted to check the results in case of any machine error.

“There were no discrepancies made and everything turned out fine,” Kemp said.

Johnson wasn’t worried there would be any discrepancies, though.

“I was pretty confident the results would stay the same,” Johnson said.

And they did. The results came back 100 percent the same as before, 320-311, in Johnson’s favor. The recount took about an hour to complete, Johnson said.

This time around, the numbers were tallied by counting 25 percent of the votes by hand. The 36th precinct was recounted because it had the most votes cast, Johnson said.

Johnson has concerns about the cost of the recount, saying that it was between $250 to $300 in tax money.

“It was a waste of taxpayer money,” he said. “Even Eileen Durbin [county Democratic chairwoman] thought it was a waste of time and money.”

Despite the results, Kemp said he plans on staying involved in the community and attending county board meetings.

“I will still make my opinion known, but I hope Mr. Johnson does well,” Kemp said.

Johnson, along with the other newly elected county board members, will be inaugurated Dec. 2.

Democrat Ruth Anne Tobias led the vote with 448 votes. The top two candidates represent the district on the board.
