Durbin named official winner in Senate race

With only 37 percent of votes reported, Democratic candidate incumbent Richard Durbin was named the official winner in the Senate race against Republican candidate Jim Durkin.

At Durbin’s victory speech Tuesday night, he spoke to an enthusiastic audience and thanked his family and union representatives for their support in his campaign.

He also spoke with news organizations about which party will dominate the Senate.

“Right now, there are so many seats that are in transition that there’s really no way to tell until everything’s done,” Durbin said.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Durbin received 60 percent of the votes, while Durkin received 38 percent.

Durbin’s campaign ads that ran the week before the election emphasized the ‘B’ in his name in order to alleviate voting mistakes between himself and his opponent, Durkin.

These ads, along with Durkin’s under-funded campaign, attributed to his early lead and quick victory, according to the Associated Press.

Some of Durbin’s goals for his new term are reducing crime, making college more affordable, improving education and campaign finance reform.

“I picked Durbin mostly because I’m pretty satisfied with his work so far,” said Rachel Helfrich, a freshman journalism and English major.
