Sycamore death ruled homicide
November 18, 2002
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has called the death of Joseph Brandt, 35, of Sycamore, a homicide.
Based on an autopsy by DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller, Sheriff Roger Scott said Friday that Brandt died because of a gunshot wound. The details on the type of weapon have not been released by the sheriff’s office, but Scott said information probably will be released later.
He said the details cannot be released because the type of weapon is vital to the investigation.
Scott also could not comment on the nature of the wound.
“Until we make fundamental, solid progress, we can’t release much,” Scott said.
DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said that as of Sunday he was unaware of any developments in the case. While the investigation is in the sheriff’s department’s jurisdiction, Lt. Jim Kayes and other detectives from the DeKalb Police Department are involved.
Scott was unavailable over the weekend for additional comments.
Brandt was found dead by his landlord Wednesday night in his home at 15415 Old State Road. The time frame between the death and when Brandt was found still is unknown.
The investigation is headed up by the DeKalb County Major Case Squad, which is comprised of DeKalb and Sycamore police, University Police detectives Roger Van Vlerah and John Lovell and Sheriff’s office detectives.
Also assisting in the case is a Kane County Sheriff’s investigator because Brandt’s home is about two miles from the Kane County line, Scott said.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 895-2155 or CrimeStoppers at 895-3272.
