Fraternity taking their game on the road

One NIU fraternity is taking flag football seriously.
Sigma Phi Epsilon’s flag football team, Sig Ep Strength and Honor, accomplished a three-peat in the NIU intramural league this season and is on their way to represent NIU at the regional tournament.
This year, the American Collegiate Intramural Championships (ACIC) seven-on-seven Flag Football Regional is being held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky.
The “Battle of the Bluegrass” begins on Saturday.
The tournament is expected to draw more than 60 teams from a six states and will be divided into three-team pools for Saturday afternoon’s round-robin tournament. The top two teams from each pool will then advance to a single-elimination tournament to be held all day Sunday.
The grand prize for the competition is automatic entrance into the ACIC Nationals, as well as travel and a stipend for a trip to New Orleans over New Year’s weekend.
Sig Ep Strength and Honor has won 13 intramural games in a row, and has not allowed more than seven points in a game since last November. This year, the Sig Eps outscored opponents 163-25 in posting their second-straight undefeated season with a 6-0 record.
Several students are excited for the team and wish them the best of luck.
“They should continue to go for it,” said Erica Ventress, a sophomore physical education major. “I’m proud of them and I hope they represent our school well.”
Vanessa Grimaldi, a junior childhood education major, agreed.
“It’s wonderful to see teams succeed at what they put their effort into,” she said. “I think this is great, and I hope they win.”
Phillip Kidd, a senior industrial technology major, thought it was great.
“I feel there should be more recognition from the school about this accomplishment,” he said. “This is their third time going to regionals, the school should give them more recognition than they are.”
As the 145th-ranked college team in the nation, according to FlagMag magazine, the 10 men making up the team are Drew Josephson, Brian Kedzior, Steve Kulovits, Henry Lloyd, Steve O’Malley, Brain Roemer, Mike Schieve, Erik Swastek, Erik Wilde and Frank Woodin.
