Democratic candidate calls for recount
November 11, 2002
Mario Kemp, a Democratic candidate who ran to represent County District 6, is calling for a recount of Tuesday’s ballots.
According to the results, Kemp received 311 votes, while Republican Eric Johnson, who also is the Student Association director of governmental affairs, received 320 votes.
Since there is a nine-vote difference, Kemp decided last Friday to challenge the results.
“It was so close,” Kemp said. “There may be a chance some votes were not counted.”
Johnson said the Republican county chair was sure the results were correct.
“I’m confident the results will stay the way it is,” Johnson said.
Kemp said the county Democratic chair will file a petition for a recount within a day or two.
“Chances are nothing will change,” Kemp said. “I’d like to make sure.”
The recount procedure requires the county to undertake a recount of ballots in two of the six polling places in the district. The two most populous districts will be chosen.
The recount and the final decision will be announced this week.
If the final results show that Johnson did not win the election, he said he would not challenge it again.
“This just shows that every vote does count,” Johnson said.
Democrat Ruth Anne Tobias led the race with 448 votes. The top two candidates are the ones to represent the district in County Board.
The Democrats picked up three seats in the elections, but the Republicans dominate 14 to 10.
District 6 controls most of the city’s west side, including Grant and Stevenson Towers.
