Allgood receives 55-year sentence
November 6, 2002
Six weeks after his conviction, Todd Allgood, 34, of Sycamore, received his sentence for the kidnapping and sexual assault of a former NIU student.
Judge Douglas Engel sentenced Allgood to 55 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He received 10 years for the kidnapping charge, 30 years for sexual assault, plus 15 years for using a firearm.
Engel required Allgood to serve 85 percent of the sentence, which will add up to 46 years and nine months.
In his closing statements, prosecuting attorney Clint Hull asked for a sentence of 76 years. He went for a large sentence because he said Allgood threatened the lives of others.
“The sentencing was fair,” Hull said. “The judge did what he thought was right.”
Defense attorney Calvin Campbell said the results obviously were disappointing, but there are plans to appeal to get a lighter sentence.
Campbell said he asked for 28 years because Allgood had no prior criminal history and has two young children.
The sentencing trial began Monday, where two alleged victims of past sexual assaults that have been linked to Allgood testified.
Police officers from Deerfield and Mundelein, as well as employees from forensics labs, testified today.
Aaron Small, an employee of the forensic science lab of the Illinois State Police Department said he couldn’t make any conclusions that linked Allgood and an alleged victim from 1990.
Angela Riesch, a forensic scientist from the University of Chicago, said the evidence from the alleged victims from 1989 and 1990 are from the same source.
The trial ended with the victim reading a statement stating how the attack affected her life, and the lives of her family and friends.
She said that everywhere she went, she always felt panicked and frightened.
Engel set a date for a restitution hearing, where the victim can seek compensation for damages. The hearing will be held at 9 a.m. on Feb. 10, at the DeKalb County Courthouse, Sycamore.
