Information and idea will be shared at city council meeting

With the latest referendum getting a no-go from the citizens of DeKalb in Tuesday’s vote, growth is an issue that the DeKalb School District has concerns about.

It’s also one of the items on next week’s DeKalb City Council agenda.

The City of DeKalb, along with the school district, wants to plan a series of meetings to share information and ideas to plan for DeKalb’s growth.

The recommendation will be passed to the council and will ask them how they would like the matter handled, and to be a part of it.

Parking on Garden Road also is an issue for the council. There is a consideration of an ordinance to amend parking there after a request by 6th Ward Alderman Dave Baker, City Manager Jim Connors said.

Police Chief Bill Feithen will present an ordinance to adjust some regulations to allow teen clubs to come to DeKalb.

“We want to change the application process to allow for a more thorough background information,” Feithen said.

Some examples include increasing the level of police activity, and to have the clubs sign an agreement to have officers more involved.

Feithen also plans on establishing a statewide mutual aid network, along with other law enforcement agencies.

NIU’s Student Association and the city will hold their first meeting at 3 p.m. today. Whatever is discussed at the meeting will be reported at city council.

Connors said these meetings are a way for the City of DeKalb and the student population to discuss issues that affect them both.

The city council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St.
