Police may see new building

The current DeKalb police station is being examined for possible renovation or all together abandonment.
DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said that space problems at the DeKalb Municipal Building, where the station is housed, have warranted a space-needs analysis.
The purpose of the analysis is to determine what space is needed within the units of the department and determine what needs the department has.
This may include renovating the current building where the police department is housed or possibly constructing a new building.
The analysis is expected to be completed by the beginning of the year.
At its Sept. 23 meeting, the city council approved Williams Architects to conduct the analysis. Lori Miller, of Williams Architects, said that they have worked with many police departments and are thrilled to be working with DeKalb.
“We want to remain focused on police facilities being an important facility in the community, and how to build a facility that will meet the needs of the community for the next 20 years,” Miller said.
Williams has placed four of its architects on the project. Miller called the group a “highly experienced police team” emphasizing that each member has experience working with police departments.
Miller said many building issues need to be addressed including maintenance of the building and storage.
Feithen said the new building, if built, will be designed for the predicted needs 20 years down the road.
“We have to build on future needs,” Feithen said.
A big factor in determining where a new building will be built is its effectiveness as a public building.
The current building was built in 1968 and has been renovated a couple of times over the years, Feithen said.
