Schedule change reroutes students

The Barsema shuttle bus schedule has changed again.

The current schedule is the third one this semester.

“The change is due to students expressing an interest in a shorter bus route from Barsema,” said Maurice Montgomery, the Student Association’s director of transportation services.

A special shuttle bus service was established this semester to provide transportation for students attending classes at the new home of the College of Business. The Huskie buses do not make stops at Barsema Hall.

Monday through Friday, the new schedule has the shuttle bus leaving DuSable Hall at 7:37 a.m. The last departure from Barsema Hall on Monday through Thursday is at 4:50 p.m. On Fridays, the last trip from Barsema Hall will depart at 2:50 p.m.

Another schedule change has upset some students using the shuttle.

“It leaves when everyone is in class,” senior accounting major Manisa Couch said. “They just changed the times. It’s inconvenient for everybody now, and we can’t get to class early.”

Rexy Alex, a senior computer science major, said she usually waits 10 to 15 minutes for the bus, but she got out of her class early, so she didn’t have to wait.

“We’re going to Neptune, so it’s really convenient,” Alex said.

Senior marketing major Samantha Jeschke said she is indifferent to the schedule change because she doesn’t mind walking.

More than 16,530 people have used the shuttle bus during its 42 days of operation, according to data provided by NIU’s Department of Transportation. Wednesday’s passenger tally was more than 440 people. The shuttle bus capacity is 33 riders.

The transportation department and SA plan to continue to make adjustments to improve the service.

“Based on the number of riders, the shuttle service has certainly been a success,” Transportation Manager Bill Finucane said. “However, the schedule will continue to be tinkered with to best serve the students.”

Montgomery said further changes to the schedule will be made next semester.
