Home Show decorates DeKalb

The Northern Illinois Fall Home Show, produced by Tower Show Productions, is coming to the NIU Convocation Center this weekend.

The show will last from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Elaine Kurtz, media and sales associate for Tower Show Productions, said although the company has done home shows for 25 years, this is the first year the show is in DeKalb.

“Anyone interested in home improvement is welcome to come,” Kurtz said.

The show will feature more than 100 exhibits for both indoor and outdoor home decorating. In addition, the show will offer seminars, celebrity visits and home design presentations.

The Designer’s Corner will offer free, 15-minute interior-decorating consultations from interior designers. A professional designer will give guidance based on photographs, room dimensions and questions people bring to them.

A celebrity presentation will be given by Bob Yapp, host of PBS’s “About Your House with Bob Yapp.” Yapp will give two presentations each day called, “Presentation Doesn’t Cost – It Pays!” His presentations will use unusual tools and props to concentrate on window and exterior paint projects.

Joe Dillett, a local master woodcarver from Somonauk, will speak both days on basic woodworking techniques. Dillett is experienced in carving everything from doors to altars to life-size statues. A traditional carver, Dillett produces his work using mallets and chisels, rather than rotary tools.

“I use the same kinds of tools that were used hundreds of years ago,” he said.

Dillett said he currently is collaborating on a design for a new church altar for his own church, the St. John Baptist Church in Somonauk.

As an experienced woodcarver, Dillett said he gave presentations at similar shows for more than 20 years.

Local interior designer Cheryl Brown also will give daily presentations called “Discovering Your Decorating Style.” Brown’s house, the former Old East School House in Sycamore, was featured on an episode of Home and Garden Television’s “Our Place.”
