Sell your old stuff online
October 6, 2002
Almost anywhere on campus, if you look long enough, you can find flyers made by people trying to sell something like textbooks, furniture or stereos.
But most college students are too busy to seek out these elusive postings to see if someone has the perfect ottoman to go along with their living room.
Two senior electrical engineering majors took it upon themselves to find an easier way for people to sell their unwanted goods.
So they created www.thedekalb.com.
“We made this Web site for people who want to sell their stuff and reach more people,” said Ed Pataky, developer of the site, along with Lucky Islam.
Some categories featured are roommates, jobs, textbooks and baby-sitting opportunities for students.
The site also features a message board, assisted Web site development and links to other major sites like Google, MapQuest and Amazon.
Right now, the site almost is completely empty of postings. So far, only one ad has been placed.
If a person has anything to sell, they just have to visit the site and post an ad.
Before posting an ad, someone needs to register.
The cost for placing an ad on the Web site is $5 per week, or $8 per week for pictures.
The low cost alone is one of the reasons people may choose us over a newspaper ad,” Pataky said.
One reason they made this site was the high costs needed to place an ad in a regular newspaper.
“There were some that cost a dollar a word for three days,” Pataky said. “It’s just ridiculous.”
Right now, www.thedekalb.com is holding a special where the first 10 ads to be placed on the site are free.
