CAB brings in another concert
October 31, 2002
Tickets go on sale today for the Ben Kweller concert to be held Nov. 21 in the Duke Ellington Ballroom.
“It is a huge move for us,” CAB Concerts Coordinator John Ugolini said about Kweller coming to perform at NIU.
The 20-year-old Kweller has received local, as well as national, recognition this year after releasing his first full-length album as a solo artist. The former member of the band Radish has made appearances on late night television shows and is receiving airplay on radio stations across America, including Chicago stations Q101 and 94.7 The Zone.
“You can’t really tag his kind of music,” Ugolini said when trying to describe Kweller’s place in music since he left the punk trio Radish.
Kweller has produced two solo EPs titled “Freak Out, It’s Ben Kweller” and “E.P. Phone Home” before releasing the new album “Sha Sha” in 2001.
Holding a supporting spot for the Kweller show is former “The Moldy Peaches” member Adam Green.
Green is touring in support of his album “Garfield” which was released Oct. 22.
The band “Trouble Hubble” will be the show opener. “Hubble” is becoming popular on the college campuses across the country with their most recent album “Penturbia.”
Ugolini feels this show, as well as the “Nappy Roots” show, both part of CAB Concerts’ ongoing series of shows, provide an excellent balance for the type of music students want. He credits this to the students involved in CAB who offer their musical insight.
“We have a lot of students on CAB who have a good feel about music,” Ugolini said.
He also stressed that Kweller and “Nappy Roots” are the type of artists CAB wants to bring to DeKalb.
“The whole focus this year is getting up and coming and exciting artists to perform here at NIU,” Ugolini said.
