Individuals with disabilities who aspire for a career can explore a day in a workplace setting during Wednesday’s National Disability Mentoring Day/Forum.
The forum lasts from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Campus Life Building, Suite 100.
The second-annual National Disability Mentoring Day at NIU is co-sponsored by Human Resource Services and Affirmative Action and Diversity Resources, in collaboration with the Center for Access and Ability Resources.
“The event was made to focus on individuals with disabilities,” said Phinette Maszka, coordinator of the event.
Maszka said the event is celebrated every October and provides NIU faculty and staff with an opportunity to employ individuals with disabilities, and to notice their talents.
“It taps into a pool of potential future employees with the NIU student body,” Maszka said.
Individuals will be able to participate in job shadowing, which will allow people to experience what their careers are like.
“Job shadowing gives students with disabilities hands-on career exploration opportunities,” Maszka said.
The day’s events include mentor and mentee experiences from 9 to 11 a.m., a panel/forum discussion from noon to 2 p.m., and an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Campus Life Building, Suite 100. The Clogston Award will be presented at 4:30 p.m.
