Bluenote artist performs
October 9, 2002
Fareed Haque, a jazz and classical guitarist and NIU guitar and jazz music professor, will perform at 8 p.m. today at the Music Building’s Recital Hall.
He has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad, accompanying artists like Nigel Kennedy, Robert Conant, Edgar Meyer, members of the Vermeer Quartet and various other symphony orchestras..
Phillip Kidd, a senior electrical engineering major, also plans on attending Haque’s recital.
“It will give me an opportunity to expand my cultural diversity through music,” he said. “I might learn something new, and also it’s an opportunity to try something different.”
Haque, who was trained as a classical guitarist, also is a transcriber of baroque and South-American music. He has been featured on several programs, including Ben Sedran’s “New Visions,” NBC’s “Sunday Night with David Sanborn” and BET’s the jazz channel. In addition, he did “Lonesome Pines Special” for PBS and twice has been selected in Downbeat Magazine as “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition.”
Jennifer Jordan, a junior criminal justice major, is looking forward to the performance.
“I’m really looking forward to the concert because I love instrumental music and South American is my favorite,” she said.
Haque also has released several recordings, the most recent being “Deja Vu” on the Bluenote label.
Tonight’s performance will feature famous classical music from Spain and Latin America. Haque also will perform Mexican folk songs and Joaquin Rodrigo’s famous “Concerto D’Aranjuez” (to be performed with piano).
All music faculty members are required to perform at least one recital per semester, said admissions coordinator Lynn Slater.
The concert is free and open to the public. For information, call Slater at 753-1576.
