Women’s soccer welcoms Broncos

A battle will be waged at Huskie Soccer Field on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. as the NIU women’s soccer team will take on Western Michigan in a key MAC game.
This game has important implications as the Huskies (5-6, 3-4) are tied with the Broncos (5-5, 3-2-1) with three MAC wins. This showdown should be highly contested as both teams appear to be evenly matched.
“It’s really important for us to sustain momentum in the MAC,” coach Frank Horvat said. “We need to be able to stay on task. I don’t want to say it’s the biggest game of the year for us, but come Sunday it will be the most important thing this time of the season.”
The Huskies have scored just a goal a game this season, while Western Michigan’s stingy defense has given up 11 goals, allowing just one in the first half.
The Broncos have also struggled away from home as they are 1-4-1 on the road.
This game is coming at the perfect time for NIU though, as they’ve managed to hit the back of the net five times in the past two games.
While junior Tiffany Anderson leads the team with three goals, the offense is not just a one woman show, as seven different players have tallied a goal.
“We don’t have a go-to person,” Horvat said. “It’s a lot better having more people having the ability to finish so that people can’t focus on one or two people.”
With last Sunday’s come-from-behind overtime win the Huskies not only have renewed confidence but also a winning streak to protect.
“When we usually go down by one goal, it’s the end of the game, but now if we did go down by a goal in an upcoming game, we know we have the power to come back,” junior Anne Roman said.
