Disturbing discs

It’s Halloween – a time to take a look at some scary DVDs to watch on this haunted holiday.

“The Mothman Prophecies” is a psychological thriller. We never actually see a mothman, yet this movie still manages to get underneath our skin and make us wonder what’s really out there. The musical score adds to the level of creepiness, as does the flashy cinematography.

Richard Gere stars as John Klein, a reporter for the Washington Post. Klein’s wife, played by Deborah Messing, dies in a car accident because she saw an unidentifiable figure that John did not A couple of years later, Klein discovers that people in a town not too far away are seeing a similar apparition. Things start to get a little crazy when he receives strange phone calls and encounters a man who has been receiving predictions of the future from the mothman. This is one of those movies that makes even a phone call seem scary.

While there aren’t many extras included on the DVD, aside from a cheesy music video directed by “Mothman’s” director, Mark Pellington, this is still worth the rent.

“The Gift” is a movie almost completely overlooked by moviegoers, despite its all-star cast that includes Greg Kinnear, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Cate Blanchett. The imagery of the film is what makes this one creepy. It has moments that will make you jump, but the movie is more about the disturbing images.

Blanchett stars as Annie Wilson, a widow trying to raise kids in the south. She works as a psychic and money is tight. One day one of the local girls (Katie Holmes) turns up missing and her fiance (Greg Kinnear) is leading the search for her. Wilson has visions of the murder of this girl but cannot see who the killer is. The prime suspect is Donnie Barksdale (Keanu Reeves), an abusive husband and all out redneck. Through more disturbing visions of the murder, Wilson begins to put all the pieces together to figure out who the killer is.

Lastly, “Pitch Black” is a science fiction story about a group of people stranded on a strange planet during an eclipse. This is Vin Diesel’s first major role in a movie. Unlike the previous two films in this list, “Pitch Black” is more about blood and gore, as opposed to imagery and atmosphere.

Diesel plays Riddick, an extremely dangerous prisoner on board an interplanetary ship that crashes on a seemingly empty planet. Once the rest of the survivors are comfortable enough to have him in their presence, they allow him to help in making it back home. What they don’t expect is the planet’s eclipse, which causes complete darkness. When it gets dark, strange nocturnal flying creatures come out from below the ground and begin to attack the survivors as they strive to find a way home.

Even viewers who are not sci-fi fans may enjoy “Pitch Black.”
