Latinos Celebrate Heritage Month
October 7, 2002
A film festival, a play and salsa dancing lessons all are a part of this week’s celebration of Latino Heritage Month.
The film festival runs from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the University Resources for Latinos, 515 Garden Road.
There are a variety of films to be shown from various Latin countries. They include Cuban film ‘Bitter Sugar,’ Argentinean film ‘Camilla’ and Mexican film ‘In the Country Where Nothing Happens.’
‘The variety of events being presented are ways for everyday citizens to see a variety of Latino activities, and a way for them to experience some of the rich culture that is the Latino heritage,’ URL director Sylvia Fuentes said.
The play ‘Help Wanted’ will be presented by the Minnesota acting group Teatro Latino from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. This play, about emigrant experiences, takes place at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.
There will be a period allotted for questions and answers after the performance. At 9 p.m., the salsa dancing lessons begin at Las Margaritas restaurant, 1262 W. Lincoln Highway. The lessons, given by Luis Clersida Garcia, cost $7.
Junior business major Sandra Panciano plans on attending the film festival.
‘I think it’s a good thing to go to because you get to learn about Latino heritage, and you get to learn about the things they do,’ she said.
Communication instructor Susan Timm agreed.
‘I think it’s really exciting that they’re having a bunch of activities that focus people’s attention on the Latino Culture,’ Timm said. ‘This is only a sampling of the activities we are bringing to campus.’
Upcoming URL events include a Family Potluck on Friday, a presentation on ‘hands-on art’ by Lisa Kay on Oct. 24, and a presentation by veteran Raoul Contera on the Chicano Moratorium on Nov. 14.
