NIU rugby takes care of Northwestern
October 6, 2002
When you hear someone talk about rugby, you might think they are talking about a team in Europe.
But the truth is, the Huskie rugby club teams are doing pretty well this season.
Saturday, at the intramural field behind Stevenson Towers, the men’s A-side beat the Northwestern Wildcats 45-5.
“It was a good score, but we would have been a lot happier if we shut them out,” John Colangelo said.
After a 51-0 victory last week over Loyola University, NIU hoped for back-to-back shutouts.
The men’s A-side is now 5-0 on the season and currently is in first place in the Chicago Conference.
Colangelo said the reason they are doing so well is because of old talent mixed with new talent. He also said that it helps they are a lot bigger and stronger than most teams that they have played this season.
The women’s A-side was dominating in its 50-0 blowout over Northwestern.
The women’s A-side now is 3-1 for the season and 3-0 in conference.
Women’s coach Tom Zimmerman said that Northwestern was supposed to be the best team in the conference.
The women A-side’s only loss came to Illinois State University.
Both the men’s and women’s B-sides were victorious as the Huskies completed the clean sweep against the Wildcats.
The men’s B-side won with a final score of 17-5 as it scored twice in the final minutes.
The women’s B-side won a thriller with a final of 5-0.
The rugby team still has one more conference game before the conference tournament starts on Oct. 20.
“Northwestern is pretty soft in general, they are kind of a bunch of nerds,” rugby president Andrew Anderson said. “They are not that great. So for us to blow them out is not that huge of an accomplishment.”
