Allgood guilty of kidnapping, assault
September 16, 2002
After a week-long trial, former NIU student Todd Allgood, 34, of Sycamore, was found guilty on Monday for kidnapping, criminal sexual assault with a firearm and criminal sexual assault while acting in such a matter to endanger a life.
On April 25, 2001, Allgood forced the victim, a then 21-year-old NIU student, at gunpoint to drive to his house where he sexually assaulted her.
Allgood pleaded not guilty to the charges, claiming that intercourse was consentual.
“She [the victim] has been very courageous,” State’s Attorney Ron Matekaitis said. “She did what she had to do. She’s a survivor.”
A sentencing trial for Allgood will be held at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 4, at the DeKalb County Courthouse, Room 204.
Allgood could face a maximum of 60 years in prison, prosecuting attorney Clint Hull said.
Hull plans to have the two additional victims, who Allgood allegedly attacked in Mundelein in 1989 and 1990, take the stand at the sentencing trial.
Matekaitis said it was the combination of the cooperation of the victim, the police officers in the case and prosecuting attorneys that made the guilty verdict possible.
While the verdict was being read, the victim started to cry and sighs of relief came from the police officers who were involved in the case.
Because the victim was taught what to do in such an incident made the case even stronger, Hull said.
The victim knew to concentrate on the surroundings she was in when the assault happened, and that helped a lot of the pieces come together, Hull said.
He also said how important it was for university students to be educated about what to do in situations where they may be attacked. They also should be more careful even when walking in areas that are populated.
The defense finished its case Monday, and both the prosecution and defense followed with their closing statements.
The jury decided on the verdict a little more than an hour after the rebuttal from the prosecution.
