Kohl’s may join DeKalb
September 5, 2002
On Monday night, the DeKalb City Council will consider a request by county administrator Ray Bockman that may bring Kohl’s to DeKalb.
The department store could move into Lot 12, east of Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in the Market Square shopping area.
“There were very few retailers in our mind who would better serve to stem the tide of retail dollars flowing out of our community than Kohl’s,” Bockman said.
During a press conference Thursday, city manager Jim Connors said the proposal is for the city and county to amend the cost-sharing agreement for the Market Square development. The city and county would share the $1.55 million cost needed for the site development.
“The agreement is to share equally the sales tax revenue,” Bockman said.
Also, a part of Bockman’s request was to extend the existing agreement to an additional 10 years.
Bockman said the land was sold to development firm First Rockford Group at an “arguably under-market value.” The county is requesting the 10-year extension because of this.
Bockman added that if the numbers and cost-sharing agreement are worked out, the First Rockford Group would bring a Kohl’s store to town.
“I’m always hopeful,” Bockman said about the possibility of the city accepting the proposal.
If Kohl’s does move onto Lot 12, then there will be extra space. Bockman said he hopes another retailer would decide to build in the vacant space.
The city council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
