This weekend’s adventure takes us to the DeKalb Farmer’s Market located on Palmer’s Court, near second and third Streets. The market is run by Main Street/Dekalb Inc., which is a not-for-profit redevelopment organization that focuses on the preservation of DeKalb, filling it with shops, restaurants and other buildings.
“Downtown is a public space for everyone and we have activities to get people down here,” said Heather Fosburgh, executive director of Main Street/DeKalb.
There are many activities going on throughout the year. In the summer and fall there is the Farmer’s Market, the Halloween Spooktacular is in October and MainStreet/DeKalb hosts six- weeks of holiday activities in the winter. There also are many different restaurants and shops.
The Farmer’s Market has been around for almost 10 years with the last four years under the direction of Main Street/Dekalb. The market runs every Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. from June through Oct. 10.
“The record attendance this year was an average 500 people a week,” Fosburgh said.
Most everything you can find at the market is either homemade or home-grown. One can find items such as fruits, vegetables, bread, pies, cakes, jams, flowers and soaps.
“I only bring what I grow myself,” said Milt Westlake from Norway, Ill., who has been a vendor at the market for seven years.
Fosburgh added that visiting the Farmer’s Market is a nice way to spend a summer or fall afternoon.
“It’s a really comfortable environment, and has a friendly, small-town feel to it,” she said. “Everybody knows everyone.”
