Blaze damages home

After investigation, the DeKalb Fire Department has determined the cause of a Saturday fire that caused $10,000 worth of damage to a DeKalb home.

DeKalb fire Capt. William Kalal said the fire started in either the exhaust fan or in the wiring in the attic. However, there was too much damage to determine which one exactly was at fault.

The fire started just before 5 p.m. Saturday in the attic of a River Drive home.

When the DeKalb Fire Department arrived at the scene, DeKalb police already were inside and said that no one was in the house at the time of the fire.

According to DeKalb police and fire radio traffic, the owner of the home, Duane Hayes, was at the Huskie football game when the fire started.

A DeKalb Fire Department press release said fire and smoke were coming from the east side of the roof. Firefighters went into the house and to the roof to extinguish the fire.

Even though the fire was contained, some areas in the bedroom were damaged by fire and smoke, Kalal said.

The DeKalb Fire Department called three trucks and two ambulances to the scene. Assisting the efforts were fire engines from Sycamore and Cortland.

DeKalb fire Lt. Dean Richardson said the firefighters were forced to cut a hole in the roof in order to fight the fire.

Richardson added that the firefighters also had to cut into the walls and remove drywall to track and put out the fire.

After 19 firefighters from the DeKalb, Sycamore and Cortland fire departments took more than an hour to extinguish the fire, overhaul procedures were conducted to assure the fire was out. Kalal said the year-old thermal imaging cameras were used.

Richardson added that insulation was taken out of the attack to ensure the fire was extinguished and so additional fires could not start.

After the fire was contained, the house was turned over to fire prevention department. It saw that the house was boarded up and secure.

Kalal said the house will be turned over to Hayes to begin repairs, which could cost more than the estimated damages, Kalal added.

No injuries were reported.
