Crossroads reaches out
July 15, 2002
Crossroads Counseling Center recently moved locations, but it continues to offer area residents the opportunity to receive help from a dedicated staff with a spiritual perspective.
Having rented space at DeKalb Wesleyan Church, 1115 W. Taylor St., for several years, the Crossroads staff has branched out into a facility of its own, located at 1211 Sycamore Road.
Initially marketing itself as a religious organization but claiming to hold no religious agenda as far as clients are concerned, the highly-trained staff members specialize in outpatient, marriage, family and geriatric counseling. However, each individual counselor holds his or her own specialty.
Angie Valente, who received her master’s degree from NIU, works mostly with children and abuse survivors, while Ken Taylor works with people who suffer from sexual addiction, as well as both victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse.
Jim Thomson, who brings 20 years of marriage counseling experience to the facility, works mostly with geriatrics.
Suzanne Krzyzec has many adolescent female clients who she helps cope with depression and eating disorders.
The Crossroads secretary, who asked not to be identified, said that aside from the regular clientele brought over from the Wesleyan Church location, several new clients have caught onto the center because of its new and more visible location, including more than a few students and faculty members from NIU.
He went on to state that although the staff at Crossroads brings a certain amount of Christian background to what they do, half of their clients have no religious background, but simply go because they feel they’re getting good service.
