Community plan may tee off

That’s what residents could be hearing when a nine-hole, par-three golf course community moves in south of Gurler Road, between St. Mary’s School and the Union Pacific railroad.

The 100-acre course was approved by the DeKalb Planning Commission last week, but awaits council approval. George Stratton, developer and owner of South Pointe Centre, 200 Gurler Road, said the plan goes before the council July 8, and if approved, work will begin the next day.

The original plan for the community, designed in 1999, included a 400-home development. Now the community will include 140 homes and 80 townhomes.

The project was delayed after several issues involving farmland needed to be resolved, Stratton said, adding that farmland used for the community only will be 51 acres.

Ten acres will be set aside for commercial and industrial development, but according to backup plans for the community, the use of the land could change.

Many residents are pleased by the slimming down of the buffer zone because homes will be built rather than industrial businesses, Stratton said.

Those who live in the community will receive special memberships to the course, Stratton said.

If the council approves the development, Stratton said, the golf course will be ready for play in April of next year.
