Cavel will rebuild plant
July 15, 2002
Just a few months after the Cavel International building, 108 Harvestore Drive, burned down, plans to rebuild the facility already have begun.
“They are able to rebuild,” city planner Ray Keller said. “It needs to be rebuilt to comply with the plans.”
Cavel International, which has drawn criticism because it is a horse slaughtering plant, received a special-use permit from the city in the fall, before the fire occurred. The permit allowed it to rebuild within two years, but it’s up to Cavel to start the process.
The permit was issued after Cavel officials sat before the DeKalb Zoning and Developing Department and requested permission to expand the facility.
During the early-morning hours of Easter Sunday, the facility became engulfed in flames. Because of extensive damage, totalling nearly $2 million, the DeKalb Fire Department, along with officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, ruled the fire’s cause undetermined.
Even with the talk of rebuilding, neighbors haven’t seen any people or construction crews there since the fire occurred.
Despite plans for renovation, few details have been released regarding the building.
According to a statement released by Cavel International’s lawyer, Brett Brown, “The company is working on plans to rebuild the plant. The plan’s progress is complex and ongoing. The company has not set a date for commencement of construction. There is no further information at this time.”
