DeKalb ready for the Fourth

By Paul L. Mikolajczyk

The city of DeKalb and the DeKalb Park District will sponsor fireworks and musical entertainment for Independence Day celebrations in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road.

Fireworks are scheduled to begin at dusk and will include a coordinated musical performance with the DeKalb Municipal Band. The DeKalb Municipal Band also will be performing a concert before, and during, the fireworks, beginning at 8 p.m.

“It will be a pops concert intended to appeal to all and will be highlighted by the use of a Howitzer canon, manned by the National Guard, accompanying the 1812 Overture,” said Dee Palmer, DeKalb Municipal Band director.

Before performing, the band will receive state recognition. Founded in 1854, it is one of the oldest continuing organizations in Illinois and will receive a special citation for longevity.

Other early afternoon activities at Hopkins Park include a new skill climbing wall and one or two air-time inflatables. Space also will be made available for visitors interested in picnicking at the park.

Non-picnicking visitors still may find several food vendors in the park providing a variety of summertime foods and beverages. Food and merchandise vendors will include Cool Kids, the Lions Club, DeKalb Co-op Nursery, Domino’s Pizza, the Boy Scouts, the DeKalb Masonic Temple and many others.
